If you are considering a career in primary teaching, we offer two school based primary routes.
Our SCITT primary courses are based in our partner schools across Leeds, Harrogate and Skipton.
Our School Direct courses are based in 15 primary schools across Leeds. You will undertake your placements and development days in these schools.
Both routes follow the same structure and content, but with the School Direct route your placements and professional development days will be delivered in one of the Leeds based schools.
On successful completion you will receive recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) from Red Kite Teacher Training and a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) from the University of Leeds.
Taking place in late June, this is an opportunity to get to know your fellow Trainees and to find out more about your training year. You will be given the details of your first placement school so you can get in touch before the course starts. Former Red Kite Trainees will be available to chat giving you a chance to benefit from their experiences and advice.
Our school placements take place in schools across Leeds, Harrogate and South Craven, we currently have around 50 primary partner schools.
Primary placements start on the first day of the Autumn Term.
Our Primary course placement begins at your home school where you will gradually build up the amount of time that you teach. In January you move to your second placement school and experience a contrasting environment.
In March you will return to your home school to teach a different class.
You will also take part in 5 mini placements, which will give you a unique opportunity to broaden your experience in a range of schools and contexts.
Red Kite Professional Development
Your training will be based at one of our Hub Schools. We place a lot of emphasis on developing your subject knowledge and pedagogy so that you can feel confident to teach all subject areas and in particular Maths, English and Science.
Trainee Progress Leader
You will have a Trainee Progress Leader who will be there to support you at each stage of the course. You will see your progress leader regularly at Red Kite Professional Development days, they will visit you in your placements schools and be available by telephone and email to offer you individual support at other times.
University of Leeds
You will spend 8 days at the world class School of Education at the University of Leeds. The taught sessions, led by leading educational researchers will support you to develop an evidence-based approach to teaching, helping you to reflect on what works and why. You will complete 4 assignments leading to 60 Masters Level Credits.
